Battle of the Egg Tarts!

Ok, time to finally duke it out between the egg tarts (蛋撻)...the contestants:

Regular, from St. Honore's bakery
(albeit a bit elliptical)

Portuguese
(despite the napkin, it's not from Lord Stow's, but I've had those too)

Both versions have their advantages and disadvantages. The Portuguese version looks slightly burnt because they flame the top (like creme brulee) and the custard is stiffer/richer. Depending on the bakery, the Portuguese crust can either be crispy and flaky (as seen here), or kind of hard, like a mini-pie crust. The version here is actually from the "New Mario" bakery chain (if you look closely at the paper, you can kind of see the "Mario" logo.

St. Honore's Bakery is the only place where I've seen the regular ones for sale, so I don't have much to compare, but enough. Personally, for me, egg tarts are kind of a comfort food, a special treat that Mom might bring home from Chinatown once in a while. Thus, I have a sentimental fondness for the regular version, and St. Honore's doesn't disappoint. The crust is fairly thin and rather delicate, and the custard isn't too sweet. Another plus is that they're cheaper than the Portuguese ones (4.0 MOP vs. 6.5 MOP)

Which one do I prefer, however? That's like asking chocolate vs. vanilla - it just depends on my mood =P
